Coupang Complete Guide for Foreigners in Korea (2026)
Coupang is Korea’s #1 shopping app — faster than Amazon, cheaper than local stores, and now available in English. Here’s everything foreigners need to know to actually use it.

What is Coupang and why it matters
Coupang is essentially Korea’s Amazon — but with next-morning delivery as the default, not the exception. Order at 11pm, it’s at your door by 7am. That’s not a premium feature; it’s how Coupang normally works.
For foreigners, Coupang matters because it solves the biggest pain point of living in Korea: buying things you need without speaking Korean, without knowing where to go, and without overpaying at tourist-friendly stores. Almost anything you need for daily life — groceries, household supplies, electronics, clothing, furniture — is available on Coupang, usually cheaper than physical stores.
Coupang at a glance
- What: Korea’s largest e-commerce platform (~30% market share)
- English: Beta English interface launched May 2025
- Delivery: Rocket Delivery = next-day. Rocket Fresh = by 7am (groceries)
- Foreign cards: Partial — works for some orders, fails for others
- ARC required: For full features (Rocket Wow, Rocket Fresh, returns)
- App: iOS and Android. Website: coupang.com
Can you use Coupang as a foreigner?
Yes, but your experience depends entirely on what credentials you have. There are three levels:
| Your status | What you can do | What you can’t do |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist / no ARC | Browse, add to cart, some foreign card purchases work | Rocket Wow, Rocket Fresh, most online payments, returns |
| ARC + Korean phone | Full account, Rocket Delivery, Korean card payments, returns | Foreign cards still hit-or-miss at checkout |
| ARC + Korean bank card | Everything — Rocket Wow, Fresh, all payment, full features | Nothing — you have the same access as any Korean |
⚠️ The honest truth about foreign cards on Coupang
Coupang’s payment system uses Korean payment gateways that send verification SMS to Korean phone numbers. Your foreign Visa/Mastercard might work for some purchases — but it fails unpredictably. Sometimes the same card works for one item and fails for another. The reliable solution is a Korean bank card. See our Foreign Card Survival Guide for details.
Setting up your account
Download the app
Search “Coupang” in the App Store or Google Play. Or go to coupang.com on your browser. The app is better — English mode only works in the app.
Create an account
Tap sign up. You can register with email or social login (Google, Apple, Facebook, Naver, Kakao). Email is simplest. You’ll need a phone number — a Korean number works best, but some users report success with foreign numbers for basic accounts.
Set your delivery address
Go to My Coupang → Shipping Address. You need to enter your address in Korean. Use this format:
Step 1: Search your address by typing your dong (동) or road name (로) in the search field.
Step 2: Select the correct result.
Step 3: Add your building name, floor, and unit number in the detail field.
💡 Tip: Save your Korean address in your phone’s notes. You’ll paste it everywhere.
Verify identity (for full features)
For Rocket Wow, returns, and full payment options, Coupang requires identity verification 본인인증. This needs your ARC number and Korean phone number for SMS verification. Without this, you can still browse and make some purchases.
Switching to English
Coupang launched its English beta in May 2025. To enable it:
- Open the Coupang app
- Tap the person icon (bottom right) → 마이쿠팡 (My Coupang)
- Scroll to the very bottom
- Tap Language → select English
💡 What the English beta covers
The app interface, navigation, category names, order status, and Wow membership screen are all translated. Product names and descriptions are auto-translated — not always perfect, but usable. Reviews remain mostly in Korean. For product reviews, use Papago or Google Translate’s camera feature to scan the screen.
Payment — the real challenge
This is where most foreigners get stuck. Coupang offers several payment methods:
What works for foreigners
- Korean debit/credit card — works perfectly, always. This is the answer if you have a Korean bank account. Kakao Bank and Toss both issue cards that work seamlessly.
- Virtual account deposit 무통장입금 — Coupang creates a temporary bank account, you transfer money into it. Works if you have a Korean bank account but haven’t linked your card yet.
- Foreign credit card — hit-or-miss. Some purchases go through, some don’t. Visa tends to work slightly better than Mastercard. Lower amounts (<₩50,000) have higher success rates.
What doesn’t work
- PayPal — Coupang does not accept PayPal
- Apple Pay — not supported for Coupang online purchases
- Foreign bank transfers — not an option
Workaround: ask a Korean friend
The most reliable method before you have a Korean bank card. Your colleague or friend orders on their account, you reimburse them via bank transfer or cash. This is completely normal in Korea — not awkward or unusual. Many expats do this for their first few weeks.
How delivery works
Rocket Delivery 로켓배송
Coupang’s signature service. Items marked with “Rocket” are stored in Coupang’s own warehouses and delivered by Coupang’s own drivers. Order by midnight → arrives next morning. Order by 4pm → arrives by midnight same day (in many areas). Free shipping on orders over ₩19,800.
Rocket Fresh 로켓프레시
Groceries and fresh food. Order by midnight → delivered in a cold box by 7am. Ice cream stays frozen. This requires Rocket Wow membership (₩4,990/month). Minimum order ₩15,000.
Regular seller delivery
Items not in Coupang’s warehouse are shipped by individual sellers. Takes 2-5 days. Quality and packaging varies. Look for the Rocket badge for the guaranteed Coupang experience.
💡 Delivery tips for foreigners
- Entry code: If your building has a keypad (공동현관 비밀번호), add it in the delivery notes. Drivers can’t get in without it.
- Door delivery is default: Drivers leave packages at your door. They ring the bell and leave — don’t expect to hand-sign.
- “문 앞에 놓아주세요” — means “please leave at the door.” This is often pre-filled.
- Fresh deliveries come early: Rocket Fresh arrives between 5-7am. You’ll hear a thud — that’s breakfast.
Rocket Wow membership — worth it?
Rocket Wow costs ₩4,990/month (~$3.70 USD). Here’s what you get:
- Free shipping on everything — no ₩19,800 minimum. Even a single ₩1,000 item ships free.
- Rocket Fresh access — dawn grocery delivery
- 30-day free returns — even on opened items (undamaged)
- Coupang Play — streaming service (Korean content, some international)
- Exclusive Wow deals — member-only discounts
Is it worth ₩4,990/month?
Yes, if you order more than twice a month. A single shipping fee you save (₩3,000) plus one return you don’t have to pay for already covers the cost. The 30-day return policy alone is worth it — it removes the risk of buying things you haven’t seen in person. For foreigners who can’t easily go to physical stores or read Korean product descriptions, risk-free returns are invaluable.
Skip it if: you’re on a tourist visa or only staying a few weeks. The monthly commitment isn’t worth it for short stays.
Power tips for foreigners
Searching in English
The English app translates product names, but search works best when you mix approaches:
- English generic terms work: “air purifier”, “towel set”, “USB cable”
- Brand names work well: “Samsung”, “LG”, “Nike”
- Korean product names give more results: 공기청정기 (air purifier), 이불 (bedding), 수건 (towel)
- 💡 Use Papago to translate what you want into Korean, then search with the Korean term for maximum results
Reading reviews without Korean
Product reviews are the most valuable information on Coupang — and they’re almost all in Korean. Three ways to read them:
- Photo reviews first: Tap the “photo review” tab 포토리뷰. Pictures tell you a lot without needing language.
- Star ratings: 4.5+ stars with 1,000+ reviews = safe bet. Below 4.0 = be cautious.
- Papago camera: Open Papago app → camera → point at the screen. Instant translation of reviews.
Saving money on Coupang
- 골드박스 (Gold Box): Daily time-limited deals. Check it every morning — sometimes 50-70% off.
- 쿠팡 브랜드 (Coupang Brand): Coupang’s private label products. Significantly cheaper for basics like tissues, detergent, trash bags, snacks. Quality is solid.
- Compare with Naver Shopping: Before buying anything expensive (₩50,000+), search the product on Naver Shopping to compare prices across sellers. Coupang isn’t always cheapest.
- Subscribe & Save 정기배송: Recurring delivery for items you buy regularly (water, diapers, coffee, pet food). 5-10% discount on repeat orders.
Best things to buy on Coupang as a foreigner
Based on what foreigners in Korea actually need most, here’s where Coupang shines:
Household essentials (best value)
Bedding sets from ₩25,000, towel packs from ₩10,000, cleaning supplies, storage boxes, drying racks. This is where Coupang beats every physical store on price. Coupang Brand basics (tissues, trash bags, soap) are the best deal — 20-40% cheaper than name brands with comparable quality.
Electronics & appliances
Air purifiers (₩89,000~₩250,000), USB humidifiers (₩9,000~), robot vacuums, rice cookers. Korean brands (Samsung, LG, Coway, Winix) are often cheapest on Coupang. Check review counts — anything with 5,000+ reviews and 4.5+ stars is a safe buy.
Groceries (Rocket Fresh)
Fresh produce, meat, dairy, imported foods, snacks. Rocket Fresh has a surprisingly good selection of Western/imported products. Search “imported” or “수입” for international brands. Dawn delivery means you can do your grocery shopping at midnight and wake up to a full fridge.
Things to be careful about
- Clothing: Sizing is Korean (runs small). Check the size chart carefully. Return if it doesn’t fit (free with Wow).
- Marketplace sellers (non-Rocket items): Variable quality. Check seller ratings and reviews more carefully.
- Very cheap items from overseas sellers: Some listings ship from China. Look for 로켓배송 badge to ensure it’s from Coupang’s Korean warehouse.
